A landscape that inspires ...

Following the genius

Empordà region has fascinated culturally and politically from the nineteenth century, becoming a refuge for many renowned artists who have found inspiration for their works in this landscape.

Even the founder of EL MOTEL, Josep Mercader, has been considered in the history of the Catalan gastronomy like a real modern, a visionary and an innovator who submitted his genius to tradition in perfect balance. For many, he was the creator of the new Catalan cuisine wave that is now recognized and appreciated throughout the world, thanks undoubtedly to another recognized genius who established his restaurant in the Empordà: Ferrán Adriá.

JOSEP PLA, has been one of the most significant Catalan writers and was closely linked to the HOTEL EMPORDÀ and EL MOTEL. He was fascinated for the idea that Mercader opened a restaurant in a hotel on the main road to France. He was, from the beginning, one of the regular customers who always seated at table 26. In EL MOTEL he has been one more of the family, and many recipes and dishes that are still in our carte, were created especially for him.

But without any doubt, the figure of Salvador Dalí protrudes above the rest and in the town of Figueres. This true visionary, even had a premonition of EL MOTEL when in 1920 he painted on canvas a table set in front of a window overlooking the Tower of Vilabertaán. An image that is exactly the same of the current view of our restaurant, which was built years later without any knowledge of this canvas. Beyond this anecdote, the genius was also closely linked to the family and the home.

"To get ahead of the others, you need to look beyond them ..."
